Apple Chutney Recipe 1924 India

I like to make Chutney in September with ‘Pop’s’ winter cooking apples. The apples are extremely tart and are perfect for cooking. Pop ‘picked’ a bucket of apples last week – at least that’s what he told me. Friends Mike & Jill told me the whole story – haha – they picked and Pop put them in the bucket! Whatever – at 96 he can take all the credit he wants.

Smith Family 1924 Indian Chutney

Ingredients:

3 cups chopped apple

4 cups vinegar

2 1/4 cups brown sugar

1 1/2 cups dates (chopped)

1 1/2 cups chopped raisins (I don’t bother to chop)

1/2 jar (2 oz) chopped Daltons preserved ginger (in a jar – sometimes difficult to find)

Garlic clove

Salt

Pepper

Method:

Peel, core and chop apple. Place in large soup pot, add vinegar, brown sugar, dates, raisins, ginger, a clove of garlic (well chopped), 1 tbsp salt and 1/2 tbsp pepper. Bring to a boil then simmer over low to medium heat for about 20+ minutes, stirring very often. I cook until the apples are mush – it won’t hurt to cook it longer – just don’t let it burn!

Cool, refridgerate overnight, reheat to boiling, pour into sterilized jars ( 9 – 8 oz jars), seal with sterilized lids and process 10 minutes in hot water bath.

Let mellow several months if you are able to wait!

Enjoy with pork and chicken!
